B. A. in English with a
Concentration in Film Studies
For students who want to major in film studies, the B. A. in English with a Concentration in Film is one of three tracks offered in English. It is a major in film, supplemented by courses in English and literary studies. Students may also take screen writing as part of their major requirements. In their final year, students will enroll in a capstone senior seminar in an advanced topic in film studies.
Concentration Requirements
1. All of the following courses (17 credits):
- ENG 210 Foundations in Literary Study I
- ENG 230 Introduction to Film
- ENG 330 Classical Film & Media Theory
- ENG 331 Contemporary Film & Media Theory
- ENG 332 Historical Approaches to Film
2. One of the following courses (4 credits):
- ENG 431A Studies in Ethnic
- ENG 431B Studies in Postcolonial Cinema
- ENG 431C Studies in Film and Gender
3. One of the capstone courses (4 credits):
- ENG 430 Seminar in Film and Media Theory
- ENG 432 Seminar in the History of Film
4. Additional credits in English courses as needed to meet the requirement of at least 36, but not more than 40, credits in courses in the major, including:
Two literature courses at the 300- or 400- level (one of which must fulfill tier II writing: 360, 362, 364, or 368; or ENG 400 with any approved 400-level English course)
Any 300 or 400 level film course
Any single other English course
